Fibers

La Plata Farms carries a wide selection of domestic and exotic fibers from around the world. From the first time Doug sheared our sheep in 1984 until now we have strived to produce and provide top quality fibers for the spinning and weaving community.
Wool
Many of our locally produced fleeces are one of a kind, as each year the same sheep will produce a slightly different fleece due to age, weather, summer pasture or just plain variations. If you are purchasing a fleece for a special product, make sure you order enough as there is not guarantee that more fleece of an identical length, color or feel will be available.
We produce about 25 beautiful Navajo-Churro fleeces each spring when Doug shears the flock. Colors range from black black to shades of gray, chocolate and white. Staple lengths are 4 to 6 inches and we work hard to produce clean and lustrous fleeces that will spin into that special yarn you need. If you are wishing to purchase one of our fleeces, please call and order early as we have orders for many of these fleeces prior to sheering.
We also buy high quality fleeces from local flocks and shepherds on the nearby Navajo Reservation. These fleeces range in color, length and availability so contact us with your needs. Not sure you want to process your own? We have on hand a variety of Navajo Churro Wool rovings, locally raised and processed to our specifications by a reputable mill. Ideal for spinning, felting and locker hooking.
We purchase yearly a large quantity of high
mountain Border Leicester fleeces from central
Fall is a wonderful time when we shear our lambs. These virgin fleeces are exceptionally clean from the lambs spending their summer in tall green grass of our pastures. Lengths are normally about 4 inches and colors range from black to brown to white. Drop us a line or give us a call to see what we will have available when we shear the first of September.
