Carding Equipment
Carding is an essential process in most fiber spinning. La Plata Farms carries some of the most versatile and well made carding equipment. If you need a Drum Carder, Ashford and Louët have what you need (mid page). If it is a set of hand cards you need, we have several brands and styles to fit your needs. If combing is what you need to do, we have the Louët Mini Combs, single or double row, for your fiber processing project (bottom of page).
Hand Cards
* We carry Ashford, Louët, and Schacht Hand Cards that can handle those tough carding chores.
Louët hand cards are made of an exceptionally
strong and lightweight kind of wood,
also used for making piano
keys. These cards have well shaped handles which fit
comfortably in
your hands. They are well balanced and have curved paddles.
They come in pairs and are available in three
versions:
Regular hand cards with medium fine cloth (7 teeth/cm²) on 8 x 4.5 in. paddles, Cost: $59.95
Cotton hand cards, with extra fine cloth (15 teeth/cm²) on 8 x 4.5 in. paddles, suitable for fine wools, cotton and exotic fibers, Cost: $59.95

Standard Standard Handcarders
are available with either a medium cloth for most fibers (72 point)
or fine cloth for fine fibers (108 point).

Schacht has built a lifetime of service into their
hand carders
.
They have a small lip milled into the rear edge of the paddle to protect the card clothing from becoming worn and the handles have been precisely tenoned into the paddles for superior strength.

Schacht wool carders are available in two gauges of carding cloth: 72 points per square inch (an all-purpose carding cloth), and 112 points per square inch (great for fine wool and downy fibers). All carders are available with curved or straight backs.

Schacht cotton carders are wider than our wool
carders and are also available with curved or straight-backed
paddles. With 208 points per square inch, our cotton
cards are
excellent for cotton and other short fibers.

Schacht flick carder is a small, single carder with 72 points per inch. It is used to separate and tease fibers in preparation for spinning by working the fiber against either a stiff piece of leather or heavy canvas
Louët Single Row Mini Combs
Louët mini combs are great for dehairing fine
fiber. After combing, the fiber can be pulled into a sliver or spun
straight from the comb. Louët mini combs are made from Ash and
finished with a clear lacquer. As a safety precaution, all Louët
combs are machined so they are not razor sharp. Our mini combs are
easy on your wrists as they are light weight at 2.4 oz

Louët Double Row mini combs
Louët double row mini combs are suited for
dehairing the finest of fibers, like cashmere. After combing, the
fiber can be pulled into a slubless sliver or spun straight from the
comb. Louët mini combs are made from Ash and finished with a clear
lacquer. As a safety precaution, all Louët combs are machined so
they are not razor sharp. Our mini combs are easy on your wrists as
they are light weight at 3 oz
